Isabel van der Ven and Dr Jo Lee (both cancer survivors and life coaches) co-founded LYLAC: Live Your Life After Cancer which is a unique programme in the UK to help people move forward in life after finishing their cancer treatment. It supports people affected by cancer (or any other impacting illness) with living well, by offering tailored coaching sessions for Cancer Survivors (and partners), Health and Social Care Professionals, employers and Cancer Related Charities.

In this talk you will learn more about the different phases of a typical cancer journey and how and when coaching can support individuals. Overall cancer survivor rates keep raising due to early detection, better treatment and increased awareness, but over 50% of these cancer survivors struggle to get their lives back on track after finishing their treatment for several reasons. At this stage there is often a lack of support, which is where LYLAC comes in. We will talk about WHY we created LYLAC, WHAT we do and HOW it can help people affected by cancer.

This is talk is particularly appropriate for Winchester Fashion Week! Nicky Sowter, one of our members, worked as a pattern cutter and toiliste for many years before becoming a fashion lecturer at both London School of Fashion and Bath Spa University, before going on to complete an MA in Fashion Curation, with her specialist subject was the work of Madeleine Vionnet.

Vionnet (1876-1975) was one of the most innovative and influential fashion designers of the 20th century, yet she remains generally unknown today, unlike her contemporary, Gabrielle Chanel.

From 1912 to 1939 Vionnet’s couture house was one of the most magnificent in Paris. She was a pioneer of clothes that liberated women from the corsets and constrictive clothing they were still encased in, freeing them from the physical and metaphorical restrictions of early 20th Century clothing. She was the inventor of the “bias cut” which she used to drape fabric around a woman’s body to enhance its natural contours, as opposed to Chanel’s straight cut clothes which eliminated them.

We are planning a Women's poetry evening this month, as a way of sharing and celebrating the pleasure of poetry and extending our minds!! Dig out your poetry books, and simply come along to the meeting armed with a copy of a favourite poem by a female poet, that you would like to share with our group. If you are willing to read out your poem, so much the better, but if you would prefer not to , we shall have a couple of readers who are happy to take on that role. If you are also able to say why you like the poem you have brought that would also be great, but not essential. If you just want to come along and listen, that is fine too.

If you are unsure where to start, here are some female poets:

  • Wendy Cope (used to live in Winchester)
  • Carol Ann Duffy (poet laureate)
  • U A Fanthorpe
  • Sylvia Plath
  • Emily Dickinson
  • Christina Rossetti

There is a fanstastic resource at http://www.poetryarchive.org
